Mencius declared that both fish and bear's paws were desirable to him, but if he could not have both, he would choose the bear's paws over the fish. Similarly, he valued both life and righteousness highly, but if he could not maintain both, he would abandon his life to uphold righteousness. He emphasized that while life was precious, there were things he valued even more than life, and therefore he would not compromise his principles to merely sustain his life. Although death was undesirable to him, there were things more dreadful than death that he would not avoid, even in the face of potential harm.
